The Washington Park Loop in Denver is one of the most popular recreational areas in Denver city. The trail is perfect for riding as it has paved, gravel and natural paths. It is the only continuous loop available to cyclists within the city. The park can get pretty packed on weekends with hikers, joggers, and dogs. Luckily, many joggers prefer to use the 2.6-mile perimeter loop to avoid distractions from riders. You can also ride on the park’s inner paved road to avoid obstructions.
The Washington Park Loop in Denver is accessible from the trail's north end in the paved parking lot right off South Downing street. You can access all four entry points with a van.
The trail is about 5 ft wide and has many wide passing spaces. It is smooth and paved, thus ideal for road biking. Whether a beginner, intermediate or skilled rider, you will enjoy a ride on the 2.3 miles trail. It is rated mostly gentle, with just a few uphill and downhill manageable sections. We do not recommend this trail if you are looking for a technical riding experience. Even the unpaved sections of the trail are easy.
The moderately steep sections on the road are about 0.2 and 0.5 miles away from the parking lot if you are cycling the loop clockwise.
The Washington Park Loop has picnic benches and tables for resting. The picnic areas have grills and many grassy spots for relaxing. Moreover, the park has enough restrooms and water fountains.
On your way back, you can rent a paddle boat and explore the small Smith Lake in the park. The lake also allows fishing if you are interested. You will also see Grasmere lake and Lily Pond.
The lush green lawns and flower gardens in the park are also a refreshing sight, especially during summer. We recommend riding in the park anytime between April and October for the best experience.
