Located just north of Brevard and about 40 minutes south of Asheville, the Turkeypen Gap Trailhead is accessible via Highway 280. Look for Turkeypen Road just past the Bolyston Creek Church if coming from Asheville. Drive up the road until you reach the parking lot, and the trailhead will be uphill on your left. If the trail immediately starts with a steep slope, you're in the right place.
Turkeypen Gap Trail is not for the faint-hearted. As an incredibly tough trail featuring steep, rocky terrains and drastic changes in elevation, this one is reserved for seasoned cyclists. The first 6 miles are a taxing climb, accumulating roughly 1500 feet in elevation until reaching the Black Mountain Trail intersection. After this climb, brace yourself for a rowdy descent that might just make the uphill struggle worth it.
Although part of a loop that includes other trails and some road riding, Turkeypen Gap itself is enough to work any rider hard. The trail's description doesn't exaggerate; the experience here is as unyielding as they come. Riding it downhill may use different muscles, but it's almost as hard as tackling it uphill. Over the years, the trail has become rugged, washed out, and overgrown, making it physically punishing even for experienced riders.
If you're up for an extreme challenge, Turkeypen Gap Trail is your arena. However, a much-needed pruning and maintenance could make this trail less punishing and more enjoyable. As it stands, this trail seems best suited for those who relish the physical demand and have the technical skills to navigate a challenging landscape. But be warned: Turkeypen Gap is not a trail that will treat you kindly.
