Tucked away in the scenic suburbs of Bethesda, Maryland, Tortilla Trail remains something of a local secret. Offering a 3-mile loop of challenging yet fun terrain, it's the perfect escape for bikers living in the D.C. metro area. The singletrack is well-worn thanks to a cadre of in-the-know locals, yet surprisingly it hasn't garnered the recognition it deserves.
The trailhead starts a hundred feet down Tortilla Trail, accessible from Goya Drive. Here, a river/stream crossing awaits you. Once you've managed this aquatic challenge, you'll soon hit a split. Both left and right paths complete the loop, but the left is highly recommended.Choosing left takes you down a section that runs parallel to 270S. This part offers a platter of biking delicacies: twists, turns, switchbacks, and at-grade stream crossings. One of the immediate challenges is a steep uphill section that'll leave your legs demanding respite. Towards the loop's end, you'll encounter abandoned campground sites before being led out onto a dirt access road. Another quick bend and you're back to the trail split, completing the loop.
While it's a loop that favors intermediate riders, beginners looking for a challenge won't find themselves in too much trouble here. Several riders note the trail's excellent condition. Fallen trees have been cleared, new paths have been cut, and all of it seems primed for riding. Recent additions include machine-made berms and rollers, enhancing the overall experience.
For those in the Bethesda and Potomac area, Tortilla Trail offers an escape that's both challenging and enjoyable. A variety of terrains, mixed in with natural obstacles and a smattering of local history, make this a loop worth discovering. Don't miss out on this local gem that's as fun to ride as it is hard to find.
Whether you're a local or just visiting, Tortilla Trail packs enough punch to make it a must-ride for any mountain biker in the Bethesda area.
