For cyclists seeking an aerobic challenge, the sections of the Pinhoti Trail referred to as P4 and P5 deliver an exhausting yet satisfying ride. Accessed via Tatum Lead Road, these segments of the Pinhoti can be tackled as an out-and-back route or connected to the Rock Creek ORV trails for a 15-mile lollipop-shaped loop. Situated in Chatsworth, Georgia, the trail not only challenges with its terrain but also thrills with moments of airborne excitement.
Starting from Ellijay, drive along GA 52 west for approximately 12 miles until reaching the Cohutta overlook. Park your car here. The Tatum Lead-Pinhoti trailhead is located about half a mile west of the overlook on the south side of GA 52.
The ride starts with the P4 section, a single-track marvel that sets the mood for what lies ahead. After around one mile, make a left onto Tatum Lead Road, a 4WD trail that connects P4 to P5. Although a rather uneventful fire road, Tatum Lead provides several well-placed "whoops" that offer opportunities to catch some air while descending.Upon reaching P5, cyclists have two primary choices:
The ride has its challenges — steep grinds, arduous climbs, and aerobic taxing segments make it a laborious but fulfilling experience. While P4 offers a fantastic single-track experience, its short length leaves cyclists yearning for more. P5, although not as tight as P4, is a well-maintained double-track with several creek crossings. Some riders have found the experience to be a "once-and-done" due to its grueling nature, while others appreciate the varying elements like creek crossings and well-placed whoops for catching air.
While some segments may feel more like a road than a trail, the Pinhoti P4 and P5 routes off Tatum Lead Road in Chatsworth are best described as an aerobically challenging yet rewarding cycling experience. With steep descents, exhilarating single tracks, and opportunities to extend the adventure, it provides a fulfilling, if exhausting, day out on the bike.
