Tucked away 3 miles west of Blacksburg, Virginia, the Pandapas Pond Day Use Area, or Poverty Creek Trail System, is a formidable playground for mountain biking enthusiasts. With a diverse network of trails covering 34 miles and varying in technical difficulty, this area serves as a challenging and rewarding riding spot.
The trail system at Pandapas Pond offers something for every rider: from flat, non-technical rollers to challenging ascents that will have even experienced riders dismounting. Look out for rock gardens, especially along the ridge trails, and fast downhill descents furnished with jumps and obstacles.
Several trails bear the black diamond label for a reason: technical segments laden with rocks and roots demand precise control. One such trail, known locally as 'Beast,' can deliver a punishing climb and a rewarding yet dangerous downhill, especially if focus wanes.
Be mindful of where the wheel is going, as commented by many experienced riders. Watch out for sudden jumps, especially ones that can't be rolled—more than one collarbone has been compromised here.
Take US 460 west from Blacksburg for approximately 3 miles and turn left across from VA 621 into the Pandapas Pond Day Use Area. Parking is immediate and abundant.
Pandapas Pond is old school mountain biking at its finest, boasting a vast and versatile network that allows riders to find their ideal blend of fun and challenge. Accessible via the Gateway Old Farm Trail or the Pandapas Pond parking lot, this area promises fast, rocky, and adrenaline-pumping experiences. Don't forget the annual Rowdy Dawg MTN Bike Race every October, the oldest continuously run mountain bike race in Virginia!
