Trail Specs

  • Distance: 20 miles
  • Level: Difficult
  • Route Type: Loop
  • Altitude: Approximately 6000 feet

Getting There

For adventurers coming from Colorado City, AZ, proceed west on Highway 59 to State Street, which leads to Gooseberry Mesa. Continue for one street further and turn south. Following a quick eastward bend, a southward branch emerges—take the right turn. Drive 5 miles till you reach a four-way junction, where an ancient, overgrown corral sits on the left. Make a right turn and then another left at a T-junction. The trailhead is around 3 miles from the corral. It's advisable to park on the slickrock, as the road worsens near the trailhead.

What to Expect

The primary ride is a 9-mile loop characterized by slickrock and single-track terrains sprinkled with technical moves. Cairns serve as essential markers, especially in sections where signage is lacking. At approximately 8 miles into the loop, riders encounter a T-junction. Turning right is the quicker exit, while a left turn elongates the ride by 2 miles through a highly technical canyon, replete with more stunt areas.

Highlights:

  • Flowy sections through the junipers
  • Multiple slickrock playgrounds
  • Cliff-edge scenic views towards Gooseberry Mesa and Pine Valley Mountains
  • A freeride slickrock area to the east of the loop

Rider's Tips

  • Navigation: Due to inconsistent signage and tampering by some locals, carrying a GPS is strongly advised.
  • Hydration: The Utah sun can be unforgiving. Make sure to bring plenty of water, particularly on hot days.
  • Caution: The trail passes near cliffs and archaeological sites. Be responsible and avoid riding into sensitive areas.
