Located just 30 minutes away from Boston in Burlington, Massachusetts, Landlocked Forest offers a tight-knit web of intermediate-level mountain bike trails. Packed into an area with about 7 miles of riding, this trail system might seem compact but it packs a punch, offering everything from jumps and drops to technical root sections.
To reach the Landlocked Forest, take the 95 N to Rt 4 N, then right on Eldred, left on Grove, right on Dewey, and finally a right onto Gould. Navigate around to Turning Point Rd and park under the power lines. On weekends and holidays, parking at Estabrook School is another good option. Follow the trail behind the school to emerge onto Turning Mill Road.
Despite the trail network's size, a first-timer would be forgiven for thinking it’s a lot bigger. That’s because the trails are like a rabbit's warren: twisty, rooted, and chock-full of features. Riders can enjoy a mix of fast, flowy sections interspersed with occasional technical challenges. There are hand-made jumps, big drops, and plenty of fun stuff to play around with—evidently the labor of love from a dedicated trail builder over four years.
Reviews are generally positive, commending the trail for its variety and technical features. However, not everyone finds the trails to be as flowy as some claim. It’s a trail that demands some local knowledge to fully enjoy. Several riders suggest focusing on the trails to the left of the parking area, particularly the red trails, for the most engaging sections. If you get lost, don’t worry; it’s almost impossible to actually lose your way in this maze of paths.
Landlocked Forest may be small in size, but it's big on thrills. Ideal for intermediate riders, it offers a playground of technical features and challenges that are sure to delight and test your skills. Just remember, it can get confusing, so a map or a local guide can make a world of difference. Overall, if you're anywhere near Burlington, Massachusetts, this is one spot you shouldn’t pass up.
