Nestled in the charming town of Dahlonega, Georgia, lies an often-overlooked mountain biking trail that links Jake Mountain to Bull Mountain trailheads. Renowned for its well-crafted singletrack and scenic vistas, this trail offers a superb ride for those in the know. Covering a distance of 6 miles, it is a trail of intermediate difficulty with a predominantly 'Out & Back' route type.
The trail is indeed a masterpiece of singletrack construction, appreciated for its fast and flowing nature. Undulating terrain provides riders with their share of ups and downs, heart-pumping climbs followed by sweeping descents. Recent trail work has smoothed out some of the ruts, amplifying the overall ride quality. Moreover, it seems the trail is multi-use and bi-directional, so a little caution goes a long way.
While the local community has invested significant effort into maintaining the trail, it has seen better days. Drainage issues have been reported, especially when the trail sees high traffic. Additionally, poorly marked routes have led some cyclists to get lost. Always carry a map and plan ahead, as disorientation can turn a quick outing into an all-day adventure.
As you ride, be on the lookout for a mysterious cabin that eerily resembles the one from Evil Dead. Further along, an old school bus lies abandoned, offering an excellent opportunity for a rustic photoshoot.
To reach the trail, head west from Dahlonega on HWY 52. Stay right to remain on 52 and then make another right onto Nimblewill Church Road. Follow the signs for Jake Mountain; the trail starts from the first gravel parking lot.
All in all, the Jake Mountain to Bull Mountain Connector Trail is a delightful yet challenging ride, especially if you're in the Dahlonega area. Despite its shortcomings in maintenance and trail marking, its vibrant community support and unique features make it a local favorite. With continued attention and care, this could easily become a must-ride trail in the Georgia mountain biking scene.
