Farlow Gap is not a trail for the faint-hearted. This is Pisgah technical riding at its unapologetic best. A descent that drops about 2000 ft within the last 3 miles of a 9-mile loop, this trail serves up rock gardens, challenging stream crossings, and sudden steep climbs that can catch even the most seasoned riders off guard.
For a challenging loop, start at the Fish Hatchery and follow this sequence: 476 -> Gloucester Gap -> Pilot Mtn Rd -> Farlow Gap -> Farlow Gap Trail -> Daniel Ridge. The trailhead can be accessed from the Pisgah Fish Hatchery. To reach the hatchery, take NC-280 South from Asheville, NC, follow NC-289 to Brevard, and then turn right onto US-276 into Pisgah National Forest.
Do not be fooled by the first 100 feet of beautiful, flowy trail. Farlow Gap is a Pandora's box of technical obstacles. Large rocks and regular 1 1/2 to 2-foot drops pave the way for some tough riding. Once past the rock gardens, which have unseated many experienced riders, brace for stream crossings and short but punishing climbs. The trail eventually eases into slightly less technical terrain, but remain vigilant.
For those who conquer Farlow Gap and still have energy to spare, consider the loops part of the Swank 65 race. They can be started and/or ended at the Daniel Ridge trailhead and offer varying levels of difficulty. Another good workout is to loop Butter Gap/Long Branch and then climb back up and over Farlow Gap.
Farlow Gap is a test of both skill and endurance. With a mix of challenging descents and intense climbs, this trail is reserved for the most skilled mountain bikers. While it’s one of the most technical and challenging routes in Pisgah National Forest, the satisfaction of completing it is reward enough for those who dare. If you're up for the challenge, it's an experience you won't forget.
