Farlow Gap Trail: A Technical Downhill Challenge in Pisgah National Forest

The Overview: Farlow Gap At A Glance

  • Distance: 2.4 mi
  • Difficulty: Very Difficult
  • Route Type: Out & Back
  • Location: Brevard, North Carolina
  • Trail Network: Pisgah National Forest

The Build-Up: What to Expect

Farlow Gap is not a trail for the faint-hearted. This is Pisgah technical riding at its unapologetic best. A descent that drops about 2000 ft within the last 3 miles of a 9-mile loop, this trail serves up rock gardens, challenging stream crossings, and sudden steep climbs that can catch even the most seasoned riders off guard.

The Route: Navigating Farlow Gap

For a challenging loop, start at the Fish Hatchery and follow this sequence: 476 -> Gloucester Gap -> Pilot Mtn Rd -> Farlow Gap -> Farlow Gap Trail -> Daniel Ridge. The trailhead can be accessed from the Pisgah Fish Hatchery. To reach the hatchery, take NC-280 South from Asheville, NC, follow NC-289 to Brevard, and then turn right onto US-276 into Pisgah National Forest.

The Terrain: Prepare for the Unexpected

Do not be fooled by the first 100 feet of beautiful, flowy trail. Farlow Gap is a Pandora's box of technical obstacles. Large rocks and regular 1 1/2 to 2-foot drops pave the way for some tough riding. Once past the rock gardens, which have unseated many experienced riders, brace for stream crossings and short but punishing climbs. The trail eventually eases into slightly less technical terrain, but remain vigilant.

Pro Tips and Safety

  • Expert Skills Needed: This is not a trail for beginners or even most intermediate riders. Even expert riders may find sections where walking is the better option.
  • Gear: Make sure you're equipped with a full suspension mountain bike and consider protective gear like knee pads and full-finger gloves.
  • Check Your Medical Insurance: The technical sections are not to be underestimated. Many riders have had accidental spills and equipment damage.
  • Weather: The trail can get muddy and more challenging after rainfall. Make sure to check the weather beforehand.

Additional Options: Nearby Loops and Trails

For those who conquer Farlow Gap and still have energy to spare, consider the loops part of the Swank 65 race. They can be started and/or ended at the Daniel Ridge trailhead and offer varying levels of difficulty. Another good workout is to loop Butter Gap/Long Branch and then climb back up and over Farlow Gap.

Final Take

Farlow Gap is a test of both skill and endurance. With a mix of challenging descents and intense climbs, this trail is reserved for the most skilled mountain bikers. While it’s one of the most technical and challenging routes in Pisgah National Forest, the satisfaction of completing it is reward enough for those who dare. If you're up for the challenge, it's an experience you won't forget.
