A crown jewel of the northern Battle Mountain Range, the Poormans Gulch Loop is an ambitious 10.4-mile mountain biking endeavor. Rated as 'More Difficult,' the trail offers a challenging yet rewarding experience, including a total elevation gain of 1550 feet. Ten miles of single-track, complemented by a short 0.4-mile 2-track, make this loop an intermediate rider's dream—or dare.
Poormans Gulch isn't for those new to trail navigation. The trail features a multitude of turns and decision-making points, making this loop one of the most challenging for route finding in the entire network. That said, essential turns and road junctions are marked with brown Carsonite signs, and on-trail route finding is aided by orange flagging.
Prepare for an exhausting uphill climb, especially during the initial 3.5 miles where the soil is loose. Yet, what goes up must come down, and the long climb pays off with an exhilarating downhill section, allowing riders to absorb the true beauty of Nevada's landscape.
The trail isn't just about grit and grind. Upon reaching the saddle, a panoramic view of Battle Mountain and the Mesa awaits. The trail also winds past small ponds, an old homestead, and even a mine site, adding a touch of history and scenic diversity to the journey.
Reach the Copper Basin Bike Trailhead via HWY 305, located approximately 2.75 miles south of Battle Mountain and I-80. Once near the hills, the trailhead is on the west side of the highway, clearly marked to guide you into your mountain biking adventure.
The Poormans Gulch Loop is not for the faint of heart but is an ultimate challenge for intermediate riders. Whether it's the demanding uphill, the thrilling downhill, or the fascinating sights along the way, this trail offers a complete mountain biking experience. So gear up, hydrate, and set off on this incredible ride.
