Located in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, the Broad Mountain Loop Trail is a 10-mile intermediate-level biking loop that offers a range of experiences, from stunning overlooks to contentious rocky terrains. This trail presents a diverse range of opinions among riders but remains a viable alternative to more popular options like the American Standard.
The trail boasts beautiful overlooks of the Lehigh Gorge, especially from Buzzard's Point. Follow the initial trail until reaching a 'T' intersection. Make a right here and continue past power lines until a forest road veers off to the right, leading to the overlook. Beyond this point, the trail proceeds past Glen Okono Falls and through two stream crossings. Wildlife like black bears might be sighted, thanks to surrounding blueberry bushes.
The terrain mainly comprises rocky double tracks and small climbs. There are also two stream crossings that are generally shallow. However, it should be noted that recent changes to the trail's surface have left it filled with large 3-4" rocks, making for an uncomfortably bumpy ride, according to many riders.
Broad Mountain Loop seems to have a split personality. On one hand, its overlooks, like Buzzard's Point and Glen Okono Falls, offer some of the most spectacular views of the Lehigh Gorge. On the other hand, the recent rocky additions have turned it into a strenuous ride, taking away much of its initial appeal for biking.Should you decide to ride this trail, adjust expectations and prepare for a rock-laden journey. Remember, due diligence regarding seasonal considerations like wildlife is a must. Check current trail conditions before heading out, especially since changes appear to be a recurring theme for this trail. All in all, it's a trail that might leave you questioning whether the view is worth the ride.
