Located just a stone's throw from the scenic Walloon Lake, the Erickson Road Trails in Boyne City offer a carefully designed network of loops suitable for riders of varying skill levels. As construction continues to expand the trail system, this destination is already attracting attention for its superior flow, thoughtful features, and pristine maintenance.
Start your journey in Petoskey and head south on Route 131. Make a right turn at the Walloon Junction, following signs to Barrel Back restaurant and Walloon Lake. Continue on Route 75 for a few miles before making a right onto S Shore Dr. Turn left onto E Shadow Trail, which leads to Erickson Road. The trailhead is to your left after you bear right on Erickson Road.
The trail network opens with a 3.5-mile beginner-friendly loop that meanders through a forest near a school. Despite being categorized for beginners, this segment offers a great sense of flow and minimal but satisfying elevation changes.
With a length of 2.8 miles, the intermediate loop brings in a bit more zest. Expect bigger berms, opportunities for air, and even some minor rock features. It also features a more narrow tread, giving the ride a sense of agility without sacrificing flow.
A new addition, the expert loop is still under construction but already shows promise. About a mile is currently completed, featuring unique rock formations and wood features that will challenge even seasoned riders.
Erickson Road Trails may sit in a compact area, but they pack a punch when it comes to ride quality. Whether you're a newbie looking to gain some miles or an experienced rider looking for new challenges, this trail system serves up a delightful experience. Kudos to the local MTB association and the students who contributed to building this trail. It’s one that’s bound to see more wheels and thrills as time progresses.
