Baker Tank, located near the popular Aspen Alley trail, is a somewhat divisive experience. Some cyclists revel in its rugged nature, while others prefer smoother terrains. This 6-mile loop offers a unique blend of gravel roads and rooty singletrack, promising an intermediate challenge for mountain biking aficionados.
Starting from downtown Breckenridge, take Highway 9 to the south and then turn left onto Boreas Pass Road. A drive of 3.5 miles brings you to the Winter Trailhead, where your biking adventure begins.
Embark on a 3-mile climb up a dirt road toward Baker Tank. The gravel road incline is slight but will get your heart rate going. Expect the steepest climb to be at the beginning of the singletrack. The altitude ranges from 10,400 to 11,000 feet, but the moderate grade keeps the ride manageable even for those who aren't acclimated.
The singletrack section sets a different tone, covered in roots and embedded with rocks. These aren’t the sort of roots and rocks that'll break your wheel, but they will keep you alert. Though not wet throughout the year, the trail is shaded and stays damp until mid to late June.
